The Azoreans hunted sperm whales until 1981 using sleek skiffs which were operated by sail or oars. I found a completely discolored picture in a small whaling museum on Flores island and loved the limited color palet of ochres and blues, as well as the silhouetted crew. I took a photo and made this painting in my home studio.
